Bigg's Pump Perks program has given away more than $1 million in gasoline to the grocer's biggest spending shoppers in less than four months.
Also, items in stores offer further discounts of 1 cent to 15 cents, which accumulate from shopping trip to shopping trip.
"That $1 million is such a big number; and to get there in three months? That's a huge milestone," said Brandi Smith, marketing manager of bigg's.
"It's a big success in our view."
The program floods stores with 1 cent offers on items. Since a large grocery holds about 80,000 items, more than one in 8 could be labeled as offering a Pump Perk gasoline rebate, said Jimmy Nichols, vice president of merchandising.
Bigg's makes money, officials said, from an uptick in volume of products sold. Revenues were not disclosed.
"It is about converting customers," Smith said. "We have new people coming to bigg's, people who have not been there in the past."
Debbie Spangler, who lives in Blue Ash, said she drives a Ford Expedition and since Jan. 20, she has filled it up once a week with substantial savings each time.
For instance, the last fill up cost just 38 cents and that was for 20 gallons.
"In all, I've saved $425...and 20 cents. But who's counting? I'm addicted to this program," she said.
Spangler, the owner of Yummyissimo, cooks food for clients to last a week at a time. As a result, her personal and business grocery bill is substantial and sometimes tops $1,700 a month.
"Happy, are you kidding? I kept waiting for a catch and there wasn't any," she said.
